Default New O.S. 46AX

Hey guys I just got a new os 46 and have been having some trouble getting it to start repeatedly. I started it a few times yesterday and followed the correct break in procedure, however that was after many times of trying and testing things. Today I got it started once but now it is having trouble. I feel like there is too much fuel because I can feel nitro come out from somewhere after the first time i attempt to turn it over and it seems to almost start on that first time but every attempt after that first one seems futile. I successfully primed the engine and such and got it to work today earlier with a chicken stick. I have no idea what could be wrong! I have tested the glow plug and driver several times and all other systems. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Check all your fuel and pressure lines.

My 1st attempt at starting my 46 AX was no good,
Had a hole in the tank.

Since I replaced the tank it has run perfectly and
Ive never run an eng before, its very easy for me to use.

Now if I could just learn to fly well.

Jimmy

Jimmy, I believe we're in the same boat.

You probably just don't have it primed right. For hand starting, you need a fairly wet prime. You can check it by priming the engine, then slowly turning the prop through the compression with your hand holding it firmly. If you feel a small kick at TDC, then you're primed right. If not, prime it some more.

Like the other guys said make sure it is primed .. Watch the fuel go through the line and into the carb,,, once it hits the carb turn the prop two more times and then try it.. Once mine got broke in It just needs a little fuel to hit the carb and it kicks right over no problem.. they are great running engine,,, I love mine...

I feel like there is too much fuel getting in the block however... After a few times of attempting to start it, I tried just for kicks to check if it was flooded and empty it and there was LOTS of fuel in the block.  Idk if it might be the needle valve, should I start over with "tuning" it per the manufacturer's specifications?

The needles don't have anything to do with starting. Don't do anything to them until you have it running. Hand starting is a set of skills in and of itself, which is why the vast majority of us have invested in electric starters. You might consider one yourself. It's worth the cost in time and frustration saved, not to mention damaged props caused by you getting frustrated as you flip away!

if you'vebeenplaying with the needle valve already, you should get it back to it's factory settings. this should be arround 2 1/2 turns from the fully closed position but you can check your manual just to make sure.

John, my comments on this thread should provide the info you need to start the engine with a chicken stick.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_70..._1/key_/tm.htm

Getting the prime right makes all the difference. Having the needle too open can cause flooding, and when looking for the bump, a heavily flooded engine does not bump either, same as a dry engine. When in doubt, attempt to pour the excess fuel from the cylinder. Once you learn the amount of choking and flip the prop over a couple of times before hooking up the glow plug igniter, the actual starting procedure becomes quite straight forward and repeatable.

You want the bump to occur on every other pull through. When it does that, get a bump, then flip the engine through with your stick. 90% of the time it will start with just one flip. If it is bumping on every pull through, it is too wet and will kick back if you attempt to flip it then. Just keep pulling it through until it misses a bump, feel for the next bump, then flip to start.

Thanks guys I got it running today pretty good.  I had a bit of issues getting it to lean out and then stay running at full throttle, when i got the knocking noise to go away by leaning out the needle valve the engine would die after i applied full throttle...

It seems to me that many folks have trouble getting their engine properly tuned. It also seems that much of the trouble stems from an improperly adjusted low speed needle. THerefore if you are having trouble try adjusting low speed, usually it does not take much to get it right the problem being that newcomers do not recognize the action that indicates this.Check out the posts written on engine tuning. Actually the low speed needle is the main one that requires proper adjust.
