The cable, besides carrying/converting the signal from the transmitter to the PC, also serves as a copy protection device, a "dongle". Such devices are programmed to access the hardware at very low level and may not work with a "virtual" serial port of a USB adapter.

I bought a usb adapter and no joy. Same problem, serial at work, usb at home.
No joy from the manufacturer either.
