As is stated replace wooden connector with metal. Use a piece of about 3/32 piano wire. Bend both ends 90 degrees. insert in holes drilled in each elev. about 3 inchers apart. In other words 90 degree bends shall be 3"apart or more. Be sure both bends are perfectly parrallel to each other. This is thr most common and best method.
