On the wire... WHen building, I also clamshell from the front the wire inserts in the wood with some very lighweightg fiberglass maybe 1/4" beyond the end of the wire and and 3/4 inch or so centered on the wire insert. I beef this area up on all my planes as its the one control surface you pretty much can't do without.
