Four channel will be fine, if it has flaps built in you will need a 5.
There are those who will not have anything less than a 6 channel.
I personally have never had anything but 4 channels, and I've flown a lot of different sport planes. 5-6 channels will allow flap/retracts/bomb drops/ect.
