They have been packing in wooden crates for quite some time. They suspend the fuse with a tube through the wing socket so it really makes no difference if you stack the crate vertically. There is no compression on the fuse since the nose would never rest on the crate. I know that they did change the glass layup from that used on the older models so extreme heat doesn't cause deformation. That is probably the wavy surface appearance that was discussed. The packing of the models is really well done. When I got my Episode last year the crate was damaged but there was not a scratch on the airframe.
