The receiver needs less than 7.2. A BEC is usually needed if the speed controller has it. if not the receiver needs 4.2 to 6.4 volts. some speed controllers have the BEC so no out side power is need for the receiver, but if it does not have it you need to provide a battery or power source of 4.2 to 6.4 volts to the receiver alone.
