Default Quadra 42 ignition question

I have a friend who just bought an airplane with a Quadra42 on it. We were trying to check the spark on the magneto and found no spark to the plug. Tried a new plug with no result. I checked the magnets and they seemed very strong and the gap from the coil to the fly wheel was about .020. I did not see what triggers the ignition to break and send the spark from the coil to the plug. I found no points or hall sensor to break the dwell time on the coil. Can anyone shed any info on how this system works. I understand magneto ignition but they all have points to break the coil dwell saturation. Thanks Gary
