Default Quadra 42 ignition question

I have a friend who just bought an airplane with a Quadra42 on it. We were trying to check the spark on the magneto and found no spark to the plug. Tried a new plug with no result. I checked the magnets and they seemed very strong and the gap from the coil to the fly wheel was about .020. I did not see what triggers the ignition to break and send the spark from the coil to the plug. I found no points or hall sensor to break the dwell time on the coil. Can anyone shed any info on how this system works. I understand magneto ignition but they all have points to break the coil dwell saturation. Thanks Gary

It has a internal solid state trigger

The correct coil gap is .012" or about the thickness of an appointment card.

You need to have the plug out so you can spin the engine fast

Somehow you have logged into that other name again?

Find your old account by spelling the name as you had originally. Captain John is not your account!

Most mag systems today, have a built in electronuc switch, that takes the place of the old points. Make sure the kill wire is not grounded and decrease the magnet to coil gap as small as possible. Good luck, red

Grounded kill wire is what I was thinking as well. There's a spade terminal on the one I had, mounted right near the coil. In operation, you would ground that to kill the engine. If there's something wired in to that terminal on your buddy's engine, have him check for spark after unplugging it.

We're pretty sure this is a 42? There's a nearly identical 35 that uses a set of points under the flywheel. Wire leading to them from the outside is a dead give away....

How were you checking the spark.
