Ryan,
Of course I am using a starter, there's no other way as theses engines are very dangerous if not done that way.
Please note I use this spinners with the Kavan starter on 4SLiPo 2200mAh with the silicon insert, which is softer and has tremendous grip than the stock one, I just apply normal pressure to the spinner, never run the starter and hit the spinner ( I hate when I see that), usually my engines start instantly, but if someone needs to run the engine with the starter it can be done.
I did just check Camodel's page, and as you mentioned they do not show the old type backplate, but I can tell you the new one seems strong enough, I guess you could ask if they still have the old type.
Please note I have only ran the reworked one which is the lightest shown, I ran it for 4 year before I retired it, during that time I cracked the cone due to wear on the bolt hole, never failed , but changed anyway, that was on the third year I think.
This is the stock one Backplate thickness is 2.5mm at the thinnest point (outboard) and 4.37mm at the Hub. Tappered from 4.37mm to 2.5mm.
This is the reworked one I used in the Osmose Evo then the Axiome both YS170 CDI ( I mentioned it was about 32gr, that was including the Tru turn bolt, and using the Tru Turn prop adapter) 1.66mm but the hub which is 2.3mm
This is the latest one I got, which is strong enough 2.57mm at the thinnest point 4mm at the hub, tappered from 4mm to 2.57
I hope this is useful, and please anyone needing more info just let me know.
Regards
Alejandro P.
