Half the population is not as smart as the other half, and many have not the time, nor the opportunities to develop the skills or knowledge of the expert. The hobby is quite diverse today, so few experts cover the entire depth and breadth of today's RC. Most experts are not self selecting this title, but they are the guys that test fly a lot of new models for others, are there to trouble shoot a balky engine, and if you are really lucky instruct on how to fly. While the average instructor covers the bulk of primary instruction, an expert may still be training a new flier many years after that first solo on the finer points with the hope that this will ease his own burden at the local field.
As usual Bob good points. Not trying to make you feel old here bud but when I was rather wet behind the ears I had guys such as you, Jim Kelly, Paul Benezra, Dan Bignardi and a few others that took the time to answer my questions and did so with patience. When I look back at that I see the value of that mentoring. For those reasons and more I like to help guys out as much as I can both at the field and on forums. I had hoped that I could pass some onto my own boys but they have other interests. IMO we don't see nearly as many young people at the field as we used to. I'm sure there are a multitude of reasons why but I for one sure as hell want to encourage these young people as much as I can, In my eyes its a way of thanking those who were there for me as a youngster. If some people don't understand my motives and want to throw a label on my back then so be it.
