Chip,

The kill switch is a necessity for safetly. It allows you to shut the engine down. To kill the engine, the switch will be connected between the two posts you mentioned and then closed. That amounts to shorting out the two posts.

If nothing's connected to the posts, the engine's 'hot' and can fire if turned over fast enough.
