Back in the 60s, 70s and 80s there were a lot of owner designed or scratch built airplanes. If there hadn't been, we wouldn't have the selection of Classic Pattern planes to choose from today.

In other words, not every pattern plane we find are built from kits. Thank goodness that the pattern fliers didn't rely on ARFs to be able to fly.
