It is probably a good idea to go with the recommended rates per instructions for your first flight.if you have dual rates add some throw on high rates,so you could switch over in case the throws are too low for you.Make sure it is balanced well.Starting off with 3D deflections is suicidal,especially when when you have no feel for the plane yet.It is easy to add more throw to increase agility,but can make for some very unpleasant if not fatal flying if starting off with them.
