RE: new to pattern
ZEN 90 with a YS FZ120 with 16x8 apc is the way to go. I love it!!. Am waiting to get the ZEN120; a YS140L will go in there. Anyway don't get carried away (unless you can afford it). Don't get a small pattern, get one with at least a 65" span; only my opinion guys.
Now a super plane (an old one) is the Calypso(I bought this used from someone on RCU) which I have been flying lately as if there is no tomorrow; I have a YS FZ91 in there with a 13x11 apc. it is ballistic and qualifies as a plane for a speed freak (thats me). If you can lay your hands on an original Calypso, get it. I think you could use a decent 61 2 stroke in there, much cheaper.
Both the planes mentioned are very fast at wot, however the low speed performance, at almost an engine tickover is also incredible; can be flown at almost stall speed, never drop a wing, require virtually no rudder correction during landing, even in a 15mph cross wind. But those who fly pattern already know that.
If you get the ZEN90 and fly off grass, put at least 1/8" shims on the trailing edge of the retracts to lean them forward to stop the plane from nosing in when landing especially on grass fields. I have the CG right there though different people may have the CG a little further back. I replaced the retracts with metal ones as the original cracked when I flew in extremely cold weather during the winters. I picked up a few at the club fly-in.
