Poke around this forum a bit. Look for threads on the Widebody and Dave Stuart.

Luke,

Welcome to the Pattern world, you`ve been bitten by the Pattern bug,and i think there`s only one cure for this bite, that`s is to buy a light, long, beautiful and fatt looking Pattern Plane.

Anyway,a good pattern plane to star with is a Zen 90,if you want a 60 2 stroke,i have seen them fly with a YS60 and it has allot of power, there`s plenty of power for the Sportsman and Intermediate sequence.Or i have a friend known as Pro Pattern,he has one with a YS91FZ 4 stroke, and he`s very happy with it,and with the new YS110FZ in the nose, hang on to your hat.

You are in the UK,go to probuild UK and check if they have them.
I don`t know the website, but go to search and type in Pro Build UK you`ll find it.

Hello Luke,

I have a ZEN 90 like Pattern freak says, I like It a lot flying is great and the
Construction of the plane it self is good.
Here is the website for the ZEN 90 in UK www.swdistribution.co.uk
(distributor for the world models )
Or you can search at www.theworldmodels.com for the specification and pic.

Hope this help and welcome to PATTERN.

ZEN 90 with a YS FZ120 with 16x8 apc is the way to go. I love it!!. Am waiting to get the ZEN120; a YS140L will go in there. Anyway don't get carried away (unless you can afford it). Don't get a small pattern, get one with at least a 65" span; only my opinion guys.

Now a super plane (an old one) is the Calypso(I bought this used from someone on RCU) which I have been flying lately as if there is no tomorrow; I have a YS FZ91 in there with a 13x11 apc. it is ballistic and qualifies as a plane for a speed freak (thats me). If you can lay your hands on an original Calypso, get it. I think you could use a decent 61 2 stroke in there, much cheaper.

Both the planes mentioned are very fast at wot, however the low speed performance, at almost an engine tickover is also incredible; can be flown at almost stall speed, never drop a wing, require virtually no rudder correction during landing, even in a 15mph cross wind. But those who fly pattern already know that.

If you get the ZEN90 and fly off grass, put at least 1/8" shims on the trailing edge of the retracts to lean them forward to stop the plane from nosing in when landing especially on grass fields. I have the CG right there though different people may have the CG a little further back. I replaced the retracts with metal ones as the original cracked when I flew in extremely cold weather during the winters. I picked up a few at the club fly-in.

The Zen 32 is a bit too small to fly 'proper' pattern
It's not a bad model though, I have one with an OS 48 surpass four stroke which makes an ideal winter model because it goes in the back of the car in one piece.

A great alternative is the World Models T34. It sells for around $130 here. While assembling the wing, if you remove the dihedral, put an OS50sx; oh boy, this is one heck of a plane; extremely sturdy. It is very popular at my club. I think it is a great starter plane for pattern. Our local pattern buff, Eric Henderson (he writes in the AMA magazine) highly modified a T34, extended ailerons, elevator and rudder; he stuck a YS-63 in there.

I have flown the Zen 32; it is too small to fly comfortablly in any windy condition. It is a great model to dump in the car to go for a quick flight but does not really give any satisfaction of a pattern like model.

By the way, my local hobby shop is Creek Hobbies (mentioned earlier) and the Quest 90 is a great model. It flys best with an OS91 or equivalent (I am not mentioning any 4 strokes here). The Quest 90 sells for around $225-$249.

I think you are in Bedfordshire. Pity; I am flying to Dublin end of this month for 4 days and then travelling to London and staying in Southampton for 3 days; my daughter's graduation; she is studying at Southampton Univ.

thanks for all your replys, you have given me a great insight into pattern flying. i have only been flying since march this year, working on my B. i tell you what got me into pattern (you might laugh) was the ripmax gambler 40 it fly brilliently (enya 40) i have sharpened up my slow rolls and 4 point rolls be need that bit more precision. hence wanting a pattern ship. i shall diffnatly look into a bigger one, but are they all glass fuzzes or can you get built up ones and are they all one piece models

thats weird Luke, I did exactly the same thing.

The Ripmax Gambler was my second plane and I flew it to death, I taught myself slow rolls, rolling circles, etc etc. Unfortunately the front end got so fuel soaked that I retired it. A great flying model, shame that they dont make them anymore.

I'm more into scale aerobatics, but would love a pattern plane too. Maybe a Zen 90.....

there are some more gamblers floating around modelshops. i know my local modelshop Mainly models (hitchin, hertfordshire) might have some. i got mine minus a wing luckily he had some damed ones with a good wing later on. ask around! cheack his web site at www.mainlymodels.com. i fly in his combat team and will be display flying for him next year at some big shows. if wings and wheels goeas ahead. whats the point in building houses on a historical airfield that is still used today. it really f**ks me off. but that another matter!
