In my experience, the black MAS props in the 9-12" range aren't very efficient. You usually get better pull from an APC of the same size. An 11x5 or 11x6 APC should pull well, a 10x7 APC will also work, but will fly fairly fast.
I'm not surprised the wood prop out-pulled the MAS prop, that's in line with my experience as well.
