For backdoor, backyard, neighborhood cul-de-sac, work site, general bashing...a Traxxas Rustler is always a good choice. I am partial to stadium trucks because of the way they handle. Also, the Rustler having ability to cut the power in half with a push of a button ...great for newcomers. There is a reason why they haven't changed much, they just plain work.
