I've just reassembled my engine after lots of balancing. The compressor and turbine are now balanced to about 6-7mg according to the DynexHobby Impulse kit which I think is about as good as I'm going to get it.
Having slotting in the shaft with the turbine and compressor, the whole assembly feels less free than it did in the balancing setup. There is nothing scraping against the housing, the only noise is the usual rolling of the bearings.
Is it just the effect of the preload that causes the bearings to spin less free?
