If you are racing, you will more than likely be required to use hard case packs. That should tell you something right there. It's just an added layer of protection.

My first LiPo packs, from 2010, were soft case packs, and are still being used today...still used in harsh off-road environment. But hard cased packs are preferred. Having a very secure battery retention system is a must for any battery.
