Some of the brands you remember are still around. Futaba and Hitec still make good stuff. Spektrum came about about 15 years ago and is a good option too. For less expensive stuff, the FrSky Taranis line is reliable and priced right, but has a steeper learning curve.
As for planes, Horizon Hobby and Tower Hobby are the two big sources for the bigger ARF planes.
