Nope, that's not it. I removed the plug, installed it into the ground lug and connector cap, then hit run. It would light up immediately, but was only on for 1/2 a second or so. That made me think it was a bad ECU, so I switched to one Dave Fusinato loaned me. He said it had run fine on his engine, but still no joy with the MiG. I couldn't get it to pop a single time. Worked on it for about an hour and a half. We thought about doing the trick you mentioned, but at that time I'd run out of patience.
I had my other stuff to fly, so it wasn't like it ruined my weekend. But it was frustrating. Thankfully the P-120 in the Bandit and the 500 in the Bobcat started every time.
