The paint will scratch off, but not that easily, remember I used plain ole 16 ga steel sheet not galvanized. Mostly build over plans- so there is not much magnet to paint contact. I use high gloss black Krylon. About once a year or so I strip off the paint and give it a fresh coat- this keeps my building surface looking good.
