Re Bearings, DC motors are not ball raced but use a brass or phospher bronze bush, these are very long lasting.

Re: props; yes 8 x 6 or 9 x 4 should be good.

Starting diesels is a knack, try and find someone to show you if you can, its soon learned but is different to glows.
