Small frayed areas are not a concern. Just wrap it with a protector when you put it into use to prevent further damage. Never let a plug wire touch a firewall hole edge or a metal part as the vibration will damage the insulator very quickly. Radio Shack sells wrap around wire protector/leads that work very well.
