There is a product you can get from your local auto parts house called Muffler Wrap. It is a two part product, the wrap material and a liquid activator you soak the wrap in the get started, cut off the amount you need, soak it in the acitvator and wrap the wire with it. Let it cure overnight and you will not have to worry about fraying the insulation again, or getting it burned on the muffler.
