First time hover--YAAAHHHOOOOOOOO!!!
I friggin' did it!! Finally!!
I bought the Chief Giles 202 3D 40 size plane and stuck a Tower Hobbies 75 engine on it. Plane weighs about 5lbs. 7oz.
I've wanted to get a plane to hover for almost 2 years now. I've tried it on 25% aerobatic planes, like the H9 Cap 232 and the Sig Cap 231. No luck. I just couldn't get enough motor on those planes, at this altitude, to make them hover.
I talked 3 buddies into going ski flying this morning. I actually started working them last night when it was snowing. We all showed up this morning and got after it.
On my second flight, I finally leaned the engine for best performance. I'd been keeping it rich, since it was new. But, after 4 or 5 tanks of fuel, the engine was ready.
I was loafing around at 1/4--1/3 throttle most of the time. I would come in from my left and then pull vertical and hammer the gas. The plane would hover at just under 1/2 throttle.
I managed to hover about 6 or 8 times. Most of the hovers would last about 5-7 seconds before I lost it. My longest one was about 12 seconds, according to my friend.
It felt so good to find the sweet spot on a plane and just let it hang there and watch it.
I was hovering at about 75-100 ft. up.
I almost managed a complete torque roll, but lost it 3/4 of the way through.[sm=drowning.gif]
I'm ADDICTED now!![sm=spinnyeyes.gif] This is sooooo cool!![8D]
