Default First time hover--YAAAHHHOOOOOOOO!!!

I friggin' did it!! Finally!!

I bought the Chief Giles 202 3D 40 size plane and stuck a Tower Hobbies 75 engine on it. Plane weighs about 5lbs. 7oz.

I've wanted to get a plane to hover for almost 2 years now. I've tried it on 25% aerobatic planes, like the H9 Cap 232 and the Sig Cap 231. No luck. I just couldn't get enough motor on those planes, at this altitude, to make them hover.

I talked 3 buddies into going ski flying this morning. I actually started working them last night when it was snowing. We all showed up this morning and got after it.

On my second flight, I finally leaned the engine for best performance. I'd been keeping it rich, since it was new. But, after 4 or 5 tanks of fuel, the engine was ready.

I was loafing around at 1/4--1/3 throttle most of the time. I would come in from my left and then pull vertical and hammer the gas. The plane would hover at just under 1/2 throttle.

I managed to hover about 6 or 8 times. Most of the hovers would last about 5-7 seconds before I lost it. My longest one was about 12 seconds, according to my friend.

It felt so good to find the sweet spot on a plane and just let it hang there and watch it.

I was hovering at about 75-100 ft. up.

I almost managed a complete torque roll, but lost it 3/4 of the way through.[sm=drowning.gif]

I'm ADDICTED now!![sm=spinnyeyes.gif] This is sooooo cool!![8D]

Con-friggin-gratulations Mahn.....good job. I have been trying for 2 mths to hover with a TT FunTiger Extra with an OS .46. Hovers for about 3 secs. That's kewl....then on Dec 2, 2003 I did the Figure #9 manouver [X(] that's ok though.....just busted sticky covering....I patched with monokote and flew again on Jan. 3, 2004. Flies ok.........then I changed the engine for an
ASP .52.....haven't broken it in yet. When I do....watch out HOVER...I'll try again until something gives...Rock On Bro....have fun.

I'm not so nuts about actually touching the tail. But I'd love a game of "How low can you go?"

I forgot to mention that I did get a bit of a harrier at about 50' up. I was about 1/2 throttle or maybe a bit less and had full up elevator and the nose was high at about a 35 D angle. I drug it along like that for about 100'.

I just did a search about the #9 rule. I don't see myself becoming concerned with it. I do fly at an AMA chartered club, but I just don't see the need to actrually touch the tail. Maybe later, but for now, I'll practice at 75' up.

Can't wait to get out and practice again. My plane flew forever at 1/3 throttle with short bursts for hovering. 300cc tank lasted over 20 minutes with the TH .75 engine.

Just remember when the bottom of the plane is towards you, hit the rudder towards the low wing.

Cool isn't it [&:]

More hovering today on the snow with skis. I did a torqueroll today. Only got about 1.5 turns before I lost it.[sm=spinnyeyes.gif] TOO COOL!!

Did about 20 flat spins. Both left and right and inverted and right side up as well. Feeling confident with the plane. Need to move CG back a bit.

Lots of touch-n-goes right into a hover at 100' altitude.

I found my favorite move so far. I come in low and slow from my left at about 1/3 throttle. Then as it gets right past me I pull vertical and burp the throttle for just a second, then a hard snap and right into a hover. It looks pretty cool and I got a couple of compliments on it from fellow flyers today.[sm=lol.gif]

I did a few nose high harriers today with lots of elevator and about 1/2 throttle.

I REALLY like this plane and engine combo for this altitude. Too much fun![sm=sunsmiley.gif]

Before you get all excited, look at Wayne G's 5 year old daughter TR a foamy on her second attempt. I think we could all use a leason or two from her. COL (cry out loud).

Well, I gues that I can say that I kninda hovered my Somethin' Extra. Like I said in the post above a few, I have a OS 46AX and I was running a APC 11x7, but I went to a "Fun-Fly" 12.25x3.75....WOAH....what a difference.......The next time I took it out, I could get it pretty good hovering, but not really upright and a 'true' hover. I haven't been back to the field in a while, I guess since about August, but hopefully the next time I go out, then I'll be able to get it upright, and get low to the ground.

BTW, sorry to bring this threat back to the top, but I was looking through my subscriptions, and I just found it, and thought that I might post what I have acomplished.....again, sorry

I remember when I popped my hover cherry. The prop makes a very strange buzzing noise when my flip hovers.

Congratulations, i´m trying abuot 3 month to do hover and alwais 3, 6, 10 seconds, and alwais with a slowly uper, and then get down.
You may me look and think " I CAN DO" i have to wait 1 year and 5 month[&:][&:].

you can post on the forum about the bigger engine on your plane.

http://www.chiefaircraft.com/cgi-bin...DGiles202.html

your plane need a .46 and you put a .75 mmmmmmmm maibe thas the way to try hover , you have 16.71 oz/ft2 its realy good and your thrust i think its 2 times the weight of your plane.

I can almost hover my something extra with a .40 la it goes up holds it for 1-2 seconds and falls out. If I could just get the 100 for a .46...

Then I put the engine in another plane that is grounded now so Ive had no decent practice [:@]

RCPILOT

What prop are you using for the TH 75?

What is a good ARF profile for this motor. Want close to a 2:1 ratio for hovering.

Thanks,
Tim

Looks like it's good that I brought this back to the top........

I don't know when the next time I'll get out, like I said......Hope fully soon....more than likely not though....

I'll be there though....I think the onet thing I will hover sooner is my Rappy 30 first!!

Happy Torkin'
