If there's a lot of gas dripping out of the carb you might be choking too much. If you want to try hand starting, bolt the prop on in about the 12 o'clock position just as compression starts and flip it as fast as you can when starting. The chainsaw motors (with Phelon mags) seem to require a much faster magnet/coil speed to generate a spark.

Maybe Ron (rsjr) can post and tell you how he starts his Homelite 33 with a drill.
