Homelite 45 will not start

I just finished converting my Homelite 45 and when I took it out to start it nothing happened. I used my Milwalkee power drill to spinn the engine. Gas was dripping out of the Carb so I know the pump was working. I pulled the plug and got a sparke when I spin the engine. The thing ran before I pulled it out of the saw. Please help this is going to drive me nuts.

Just simply turning the engine over doesnt mean it will start unless you turn it over fast enough. Your drill might not be making enough rpm under the engines load. Once you removed the plug and then turned it over using the drill it was able to unload and turn a high rpm to get it to spark. Just an idea but you might be able to hand prop it but as always be careful no matter how you start the engine.

If there's a lot of gas dripping out of the carb you might be choking too much. If you want to try hand starting, bolt the prop on in about the 12 o'clock position just as compression starts and flip it as fast as you can when starting. The chainsaw motors (with Phelon mags) seem to require a much faster magnet/coil speed to generate a spark.
Maybe Ron (rsjr) can post and tell you how he starts his Homelite 33 with a drill.

Well guys I thing you might be right, because I noticed that it took a lott of rpm on the drill to get the thing to spark when I pulled the plug. Is this condition standard for this kind of engine, and if so will a Dynatron strarted spin it fast enough?

It seems to be normal for the 33 and 45 cc Homelites. They just have a type of mag that has to spin faster to spark. Once they're running, though, they will not stop unless you stop them or it runs out of gas.
I'm not sure about starters, I start mine by hand. Make sure you're using 50:1 gas

Did you check the gap between the magnet and coil?? I've had the gap a little to much and got a weak spark.
OK - I'll ask a dumb question, but you not using the drill to turn this engine clockwise are you???? Doesn't it have to
turn counter-clock wise for the timing to be right to run????

Guys here is a link to a cheap & easy solution to starting these bigger converted engines. I bought one of the HUGE Dynatron starters & once I found this I could have kicked myself in the be-hind. Now its no more batteries & starters to tote to the field just a short piece of rope. I use this as well on coweled in engines behind the spinner.

For whatever it is worth, I start my Homelite 45cc with a Sears 19.2v cordless drill. It won't start on the low speed setting on the drill, but the high speed works great.

Ok guys I figured it out. What I was doing wrong was that I was trying to start the engine like it was still in the saw. With the saw you put on the choke and started at full throttle. What I was doing is flooding the thing out. So I went out to U.S engines site and downloaded their manual for their engine. When I got home I primed it like they said left the choke off and the throttle on idle and bang off it went to the races. Thanks for everyones imput
