That's not checkerboard vinyl. You have a few options here:
1: cut squares by hand and stick them on
2: use Monokote's checkered detail. It's self-adhesive, not heat activated
3: print them on your computer on regular paper, trim and stick on with 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. Then cover with clear vinyl or packing tape.
I did option #3 and covered with the thinnest packing tape I could find. I've been using this technique on my planes for a few years now. Weight is not too bad, and I can print any color/size checker I want.
