I did it off of glow powered planes back around 1979 or so. We just loaded a bunch of D cells in a plane and used Estes igniters. Worked very well. We did have issues at first. The igniters worked well on the ground, but would never light the engine in flight. We just added a few more battery cells and it worked fine.
