I balanced mine inverted...seemed to work ok.

With regard to fuel tubing, see the attached photo for a good way to secure large fuel tubing on smaller fittings. This also works great for regular tubing on regular fittings.... My dad was the first I've seen do this, and I've adopted it on almost every connection I do. To get the outer tubing on, I slip in onto a pair of curved forceps and stretch it right over.
