Just to add my two-cents:-)

I do not use a strap or tray.. While training I started using a strap. but
quit using it after watching a video on learning to fly.. And they were saying
that for beginners it "May" be better to not use any holding device so as to
help prevent over controlling of the sticks???? It did help me, after going
back to just holding the Trans, And using two fingers.. But I must admit I
have been thinking about the tray now..
