Default Question regarding zoneless box and judging

If I understand the zoneless box correctly,it should not matter where you do your manuevers ? In other words,in the basic sequence the loop does not need to be directly in the center of the box.If I'm wrong ,please enlighten me.The reason for the question is due to some discrepencies at a recent event.I overheard a judge telling a contestent that he would have scored better if his manuevers were placed correctly.I didnt think anything of it until another contestent came up and asked the previous guy what the judges were saying to him, when he was told what was said the guy flipped out and was really upset that they were deducting points for this.Am I wrong?

Thanks
