Default spoilerons vs flaperons

Can someone in the know, describe where and when you use spoilerons (elevator with alierons) vs flaperons (elevator with opposite ailerons)?

From what I can determine...
Flaperons are used for tighter elevator 'turns', extra 'float' when landing
Spoilerons are used for harriers, 'pushing' the aircraft down during landing.

Am I wrong? More uses of these mixes? Do you fly and switch between the two?
