RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Pettit,
Wish I had read your post before I ran CA (a lot) clear thru the horz stab. What a mess and cannot use acetone in my garage, house A/C & gas heater close to my workbench and 113F outside. Big sweat getting that cleaned up. Which leads to.........
My garage floor is finished in a two part epoxy paint which makes for a very hard slick surface.
A while back I was mounting CA hinges on the tail feathers of another model. Had the tail hanging over the bench and the CA bottle was plugged, squeezed real hard and the extension popped of the bottle and hosed the whole tail down.
I swore, jumped up and my bare feet were instantly glued to the floor. Ball of foot and heel on the right and heel on the left. Wife is not due for several hours, the garage is around 90F and warming up fast and my feet are close together and at such an angle it is hard to stand.
Can't reach the phone (911 would think an idiot was calling anyway) help my feet are stuck!
After some time used the airplane to open a cabinet door to my far right and knocked several cans/bottles of paint and stuff (broke two bottles) onto the floor, including a can of acetone.
The only things to work with within reach were an x-acto knife and a small flat bladed screw driver and the prop blade I managed to break off. Took over three hours to get free and every time the air handler for the house A/C would cycle I thought I was going up in a ball of flame.
Hard to tell which hurt worse, my feet or back. There is still meat glued to my garage floor, although I came out the next morning and the ants were having a nice lunch at my expense.
I have a real love/hate thing about CA anyway. Also I have not worked in bare feet since. Funny now, not so funny then.
Back to the Cub.
IMHO it looks like if one is going with a twin OS 160 is the best choice, the Saito 182 would be a tight fit and I think too much prop for the plane to sit still at idle on pavement. Wish someone had tried one.
Also hope the Saito flex pipes with the pressure fitting will fit the OS. Anyone know?
Does anyone have a source for a large tank that will fit without protruding into the cockpit? Once I am lucky enough to get something into the air I like to fly it for awhile.
Glad to hear others think the hinge slots for the tail were a *****, thought I was being a wuss.
Got a huge batch of photos of the airplane this one was modeled after, if I can ever get the scanner to post to email will post some.
Bud, that door is going to be a bigger problem than you think, it goes clear to the front windshield post. Also the back seat is positioned about dead center in the back window. This means for a scale two seat setup the bulkhead with the servo tray has to be cutout to the bottom of the frame.
Not sure yet but I think the servos, rx etc. will fit under the floorboards. Still having a problem finding scale looking pilots, which will determine the height of the floorboards.
Also agree that with the exception of the wood screws the hardware is excellent, man what a tail wheel setup.
One more thing, look at the nav light setup from ElectroDynamics, is this neat or what?
