I did the same with an axi and it flew pretty well, Allthough I reckon it,s a better optiion to stick to stock and use lipoly batteries.

I used the etec 2400 and I get bored with the flight times being so long.

I reckon that there is still loads of go in the thing even only putting through 7.4 volts.
