RE: Tips on making yourself a better Pilot
I got my start in pattern like many other good pilots, I try to copy Hano P, it wasn't his high scores for loops, rolls and lines but what he did in between manuvers, he never screwed around or hot dogged, he would show up to a contest pull his airplane out of his car with a smooth continuous motion, his airplane would always start on first try. his taxi lines were straight with constant speed. by the time he was airborne the judging was over. Hano's disipline/professionalism/dedication set an example for others to follow. flying pattern made me a better pilot, but when it came to 3d something was missing. I could be smooth and win a pattern contest but could not control my airplane in a slow 3d manor. I tried everything - different airplanes, big throws, practice, nothing seemed to work. untill one day it was too windy to fly power and a friend introduced me to slope soaring. learning to fly aerobatics in high wind with no engine was the missing link for me. this got me to the next level. it is too easy to cheat and bail out with power thereby never learning the right amount of throw necessary to keep that airplane in the sweet spot. in 3d the engine is just another control surface if you rely on it too much you will never get down on the deck. it is no wonder why the best pilots are also the best deadstick pilots.
