Polish your flying by learning to fly Pattern. Don't start with the easy stuff rolls and loops, start with the hard part; a straight wings level line that lasts for a quarter mile. Now that's harder than it sounds. A lot of pattern flyer's I've judged think wings level is with the wing tip pointing at them, which causes a wide arc around the pilots view point.

Do touch and goes till you can hit the spot you want to land on any time with wind out of any direction.

Learn the full scale adage that Power controls altitude and pitch controls airspeed. An airplane in trim will only fly at one airspeed. Add power from that trimmed airspeed and it will climb AT THAT SAME SPEED. Reduce power from that trimmed airspeed and it will glide down AT THAT trimmed airspeed.

Tomski, I thought that applied to semi-symmetrical airfoils?

I thought full symmetrical meant that no matter how fast you went lift is the same either way so the equal lift cancels each other? Meaning you dont climb?

Correct me if Im wrong.

Its aguess but does the body have a play in what you've said?

ditto. youve also got the right plane to practise with kane!dont worry a years worth of practise on the C140 until the next freestyle comp will stand you in good stead. I found that concentrating particularly on getting pattern relatively smooth, polished and precise(the trademark of the good pilots like ali, nathFJ and the Boy) helped a great deal and made my flights look a lot better.

Learn to fly a straight line and not over the pits is a good place to start (for most).

Other than that, I'd have to say learn to fly pattern first, then learn 3D to compliment it. Pattern will make you a better 3D pilot, but 3D won't make you a better pattern pilot. Learn basic wind correction and control over the plane before yanking banking and flopping. All things will come in due time. Pattern competition makes you even better still, because you learn more at one contest than 6 months of flying on your own.

And most of all, burn lots of fuel and have lots of fun.

All the top sports men and women practise, practise, practise. When not flying at the field, get on the simulator. And on both, try to be disiplined (my weakness) and just fly one thing until it is nailed.

That is an awesome article, probably the best I have ever seen. Thanks! (Note the emphasis on pattern...straight and level flight, parallel to the flight line, centered manuevers, wind correction etc?) It would serve most people very well to read that article and PRACTICE what they have read.

Kudos for the link Chad, that made my day!

Being a better pilot? Start by buying yourself a good 3-D plane, like the EF edge 540 or funtana - or U-Can Do with a good powerful engine. Fly the hell out of it try lots of 3-D stuff lurn the rudder and flying inverted and you got it made and have fun doing it . I think is the most important thing. If 3-D not your bag try a nice Yak 53 or even a Super Chipmunk. The key is to try to know what your ceiling hight for error so you can bail out before crashing. Rebuilding is no fun. As you get better, fly lower. Just my two cents for what its worth.

Kane, as the RCME seires on aerobatics says, strait line is the hardest. if you can fly strait and true, then do the simpler things, then do the advance stuff youd be a good pilot. you got the plane, and buy yourself AFP. im on it all the time, well, since i got my JR PCM9x back in the 2nd week of the hols ive had over 26hours on it accordign to the clock on the screen of my radio. this sim has given me most confidence to do stuff lower AND has tought me more than flyign ever could because of the fear of crashing an expencive plane. its the best 100 ive ever spent, even better than a cougar, and thats allot from me cos there the best plane ever!

this new RCU layout is odd

Every new pilot should have to read this in our club. I wish I read it a long time ago. Good stuff.

I got my start in pattern like many other good pilots, I try to copy Hano P, it wasn't his high scores for loops, rolls and lines but what he did in between manuvers, he never screwed around or hot dogged, he would show up to a contest pull his airplane out of his car with a smooth continuous motion, his airplane would always start on first try. his taxi lines were straight with constant speed. by the time he was airborne the judging was over. Hano's disipline/professionalism/dedication set an example for others to follow. flying pattern made me a better pilot, but when it came to 3d something was missing. I could be smooth and win a pattern contest but could not control my airplane in a slow 3d manor. I tried everything - different airplanes, big throws, practice, nothing seemed to work. untill one day it was too windy to fly power and a friend introduced me to slope soaring. learning to fly aerobatics in high wind with no engine was the missing link for me. this got me to the next level. it is too easy to cheat and bail out with power thereby never learning the right amount of throw necessary to keep that airplane in the sweet spot. in 3d the engine is just another control surface if you rely on it too much you will never get down on the deck. it is no wonder why the best pilots are also the best deadstick pilots.

Climb High Into the Sky, and Kill The Engine

Try to glide around as long as possible and then bring it in for a nice safe and quite landing

its just something about it. When You have no Engine "Deadstick"
You Seem to concentrate alot better....

Normal Landing nice and smooth at times......
Deadstick Landing it can be scary and make your heart rate climb you'll have every piece of your body Concentrating trying to bring that plane in for the bestest nicest landing possible......
