Default How do differentials work?

Ive always wondered how differentials work in cars? Ive been in RC for a while now, but Ive never truly understood how they work. I think it works like this: if you are turning, the diffs allow one tire to move faster than the other, so as to get more traction or something? Im pretty clueless though, and i figure drifitng is one sport where differentials are very important, so Im guessing this is the best place for my quesiton?

Also, how does locking the diff help in drifitng?

thanks a lot
