If I'm very careful not to log out of RCU in the middle of responding to both the email prompted ones and the other messages that have appeared since I logged on, say last night, I can avoid the flag being reset to 'read' on all the messages.

However, this is extremely restrictive as it means I have to plan on one continuous session which is almost never possible for me.

Before the major change to the software last year (when I believe you migrated to all Windows servers?) the 'read flag' wasn't set for about 30 minutes after logging off which was ample time to completely avoid this inconvenience as I could log on again in that time to continue messaging.
