Hi Marc,
I am still having the following problem:-
The 'message read flag' is going up too quickly.
For example, I get, say 4 emails telling me of new messages in subscribed forums and respond to them by going to each one in turn. This has the effect of making all the unread messages in my home forum as 'read', and when I go into RCU again to look at the messages I wasn't emailed about, I cannot now see the new messages since I last looked.
It's no use me choosing the 'posted today' option as that doesn't restrict the forums shown to 'My Forums' and the list is padded out with ones I don't want to read.
I cannot find a way round this. This explains why I have almost ceased to contribute (and I'm sure the same can be said for other regular contributors) as I don't get to see the 'unread threads' anymore.
It's no use me going straight into the forum and trying to deal with all the unread messages before responding to the ones I have been emailed about, as that doesn't give me time to respond to the emailed ones!
A delay of, say, one hour before the 'read flag' goes up would solve my problem.
Any thoughts?

Is anyone else having this problem?
Dsegal - do you read the first message and then keep that popped window open or do you close it and then go to the next email and click the link and pop a new window? each window you pop might reset the last online cookie. If this is the case I don't like this behaviour and would look to see it fixed or changed

If I'm very careful not to log out of RCU in the middle of responding to both the email prompted ones and the other messages that have appeared since I logged on, say last night, I can avoid the flag being reset to 'read' on all the messages.
However, this is extremely restrictive as it means I have to plan on one continuous session which is almost never possible for me.
Before the major change to the software last year (when I believe you migrated to all Windows servers?) the 'read flag' wasn't set for about 30 minutes after logging off which was ample time to completely avoid this inconvenience as I could log on again in that time to continue messaging.
Sorry to be a pain!
Thanks Marc,

this I believe is all due to the last online time being stored in a cookie locally to every user rather than on our database side. when on the DB side it is consistent whether you open 1 browser or 50 or even if you reboot your computer. Now it is restrictive to one browser being open for an entire session. I personally don't like it and would like to see this changed to 100% DB storage to avoid this problem. I thought this upgrade had this implemented but it seems this may not be the case. If it isn't we will have to look at some major code overhaul to fix this I think so it works like Vbulletin did

I suppose, if it's the same cookie that records my login details (like ID) as well as the 'last read' message number I could switch on my browser's cookie filter, but that would mean I have to manually log in every time.
Actually, as you will know, the RCU software is very widely used in blogs etc, and I think there is a switch that can be used to delay the flag being reset to 'read'.
Good luck anyway!

I have a temporary fix until the reset time issue is fixed. we've been testing for 3 days now and cannot find the problem yet.
IN THE MEANTIME...on the homepage under the ad below the welcome panel AND on the new posts page you will see a link to reset your last login time (from RCU system perspective) to anytime you want in the past. This way if you get timed out, blown out, crash or whatever you can pick anytime you want to view newest posts since that time.
give it a test and lmk if that works ok to get you by for now

That sounds like an excellent solution.
I haven't tried it yet, but will have a go and report back how convenient it feels.
Thanks Marc. Excellent!

I just played with the new facility to set the time back to a suitable time in the past and it works perfectly.
My problem has been completely solved! Thanks Marc.
I hope it hasn't added too much complication for the membership as a whole, as it would be great if it could stay.
Excellent, and thanks again Marc!

No problem on this. I will keep it on permanently but we will track down why sometimes it resets too early or incorrectly on some users. I can duplicate it when I close all my browser windows and then reopen to the forums. It kills my last login time when it should hold the time for at least 35 minutes or so of inactivity. Technically you should be able to open as many windows as you want or even a browser on another computer and the lastlogin should be the same until a session has been started and then goes inactive for 30 minutes (or if you explicitly logout).
In the meantime this workaround should help those bothered by this until we nail it.
