I suppose, if it's the same cookie that records my login details (like ID) as well as the 'last read' message number I could switch on my browser's cookie filter, but that would mean I have to manually log in every time.

Actually, as you will know, the RCU software is very widely used in blogs etc, and I think there is a switch that can be used to delay the flag being reset to 'read'.
