Most WWII warbirds had an external antenna. Look for photos of P-51's to see where they were placed. I've run my antenna wies in scale like locations on a number of planes (externally) and they actually look pretty good if you do it right.

But internal is usually fine as long as your cautious of metal pushrods; and don't "coil" the wire anywhere.
