I get from your post that you have flying experience just not building experience. I was in the same boat and chose as my first kit the Sig Something Extra as Old Mill suggests. It is a straighforward build, has great instructions and provides a very good first build experience. I would highly recommend it as well. Here is a thread on mine:

Don't let my build time scare you off, any delays that I had were mostly due to me doing other things.
