Well, after a long time flying electric airplanes, I decided to get another glow powered airplane. I found some plans on the internet for the original Das Ugly Stick (.60 size). I resized them to a 48" wing span and changed the tail feathers slightly. I'm using a Saito FA-40A four stroke (great engine by the way!). Here's the specs:
Wing Span: 48"
Wing area: 498 sq. in.
Weight: 3.8 lbs.
Motor: Saito FA-40A
Servos: HS-81 MG (5)
Battery: 4.8V 1400 NiMH
Receiver: Hitec Supreme 8
Today was the maiden flight. This thing goes straight up! I made an oversized rudder and elevator, so it should be pretty 3D capable, now I just need to learn 3d
On a 10 oz. tank I'm getting 20 minute flights with fuel left over. I really like the Saito engine, this is my first 4-stroke. It is much nicer sounding than 2-stroke engines and is extremely fuel efficient.
Here are a few pictures. It is covered in Monokote metallic plum and pearl white, looks better in person
