Default Kyosho Tiger Moth first fliight problems

I have a new Kyosho TM and took it for its maiden flight a couple of days ago. Although all control surface throws were set as suggested in the book and elevator, ailerons etc set to neutral and the C of G was checked I had to apply full down elevator to get level flight and the plane also veered quite strongly to the right. A very heavy landed was the final result and luckily a broken strut the only damage. In looking at a review of the KYOSHO TIGER MOTH 40 ARF by Bob Wallace he mentions similar teething problems although my experience was clearly worse than his. The engine is a Magnum 52 4 stroke. I have now put a washer behing the two top engine mount screws to give the engine some more down thrust. I have not tried to fly again yet (building up the courage to do so) but has anybody else had a similar experience with this model and any suggestions about other ways to improve the handling (aside from obvious changes to the trims).
