I'm pretty sure that the "standard" wireing is what you describe, red/hot wire in the middle. So I think those are the newer airtronics connectors not the old ones. The reason for the red wire in the middle is so that you don't toast something if you plug it in backwards (not that I'd ever plug a servo in backwards).
