It sounds like you need to get a dual-gain gyro. Using a y-harness on the retract servo to change gains would be the correct setup. Set the 1st gain to minimum when the gear is up to limit the reaction, then the 2nd gain to whatever feels right when the gear's down. I've never done it before, but I'm looking at trying it as well. (as soon as winter goes away...)
